If you're a fan of history, culture and lovely voices in your ear you'll love these podcast recommendations!
IYKYK - You're Wrong About has a cult-like following which I am definitely a part of with its own in-jokes and meme pages. Hosted by journalists Sarah Marshall and Michael Hobbes (though sadly now it is just our beloved Sarah), You're Wrong About reconsiders a person or event from history that has been miscast in the public imagination.
Equal parts humorous and informative, YWA has tackled historical figures such as Jim and Tammy-Faye Bakker (including an intro by THE Jessica Chastain who portrayed Tammy in the film The Eyes of Tammy Faye), Anastasia and Catherine the Great. For history lovers who want an easily digestible summary of a topic full of witty insights to parrot back to your friends, check out You're Wrong About.
Hosted by Slate's television critic, the delightful Willa Paskin, each episode of Decoder Ring takes a cultural question, object, or habit; examines its history; and tries to figure out what it means and why it matters. Decoder Ring examines more recent cultural historical moments and breaks them down into their component parts - want to know the origin of the word "mullet"? This is the podcast for you!
My episode recommendations include; "The Karen", "Sad Jennifer Aniston" and "The Mystery of the Mullet".
Today Explained is a daily (or near daily) podcast with updates on the world around us from cultural moments, scientific discoveries, geopolitical happenings and more. Vox's daily explainer podcast is hosted by Sean Rameswaram and Noel King and will guide you through the most important stories of the day. The show is typically built around interviews, usually with reporters covering the subject, and it’s Rameswaram’s approachable intelligence that makes it compelling. The show covers recent world events many of which will go down in history as very important and influential.
With most episodes coming in at around the 20 minute mark, Today Explained is a very digestible current events podcast coving recent events such as "The Great Resignation" and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
4. Noble Blood:
Dana Schwartz is the host of Noble Blood. Dana is an author and journalist and comedienne with a passion for history. She is the author of Choose Your Own Disaster and the humour book The White Man's Guide to White Male Writers of the Western Canon. Noble Blood explores the stories of some of history’s most fascinating royals: the tyrants and the tragic, the murderers and the murdered, and everyone in between.
My episode recommendations include Dana's series about King Henry VIII's wives in which the episodes are name "Divorced", "Beheaded", "Died", "Divorced II", "Beheaded II" et cetera. Also, Noble Blood's episode on Catherine the Great is fantastic and features the familiar dulcet tones of one of the other podcasters mentioned above - you'll have to give it a listen to find out who!
